Wednesday, February 16, 2005Overall goal: To accelerate the adoption of robust, interoperable healthcare information technology while delivering value to providers, vendors, and purchasers and payers Initial scope: Certification of electronic health record (EHR) products for use in ambulatory care settings such as physician offices Timeline: A first-step certification process ready for pilot implementation by the summer of 2005. Second- and third-step certifications would be progressively more thorough and would follow in subsequent years. Certification roadmap: The commission will develop and publish a forward- looking roadmap of certification plans for several years into the future. Workgroup formation: Involvement and consensus across the industry are key to the success of the commission. As a result, workgroups will be formed to address various aspects of certification of EHR products once the commission completes its assessment of current industry efforts to establish standards for electronic health records. It's always more than a little worrisome when someone sets themselves up to set the standards in an industry. Will this become the medical record version of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations? Will doctors need to have computer systems that have been blessed by the organization in order to get reimbursed by third party payers? Will those of us who already purchased systems be left holding the bag if our product doesn't have the CCHIT seal of approval? The commission includes the CEO of this medical record software company and this practice management software company. Do you suppose their products will get seals of approval? One ray of hope, any organization with as cumbersome a title as "The Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology" will probably take agree on any sort of standards. posted by Sydney on 2/16/2005 07:56:00 AM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
