Friday, April 29, 2005As of May 2, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has asked the investigators it funds to submit voluntarily to PubMed Central (www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov) an electronic copy of any scientific report, on acceptance for publication, and to specify when the article should become public1 (see Appendix). According to the NIH, "Posting for public accessibility through [PubMed Central] is requested and strongly encouraged as soon as possible (and within twelve months of the publisher's official date of final publication.) It's good news, that is, if researchers comply with the request. They should. It would give their papers a wider audience than they get now. It would also, of course, subject their findings to greater public scrutiny. It would be much harder to put a positive spin on research that in fact shows a minimum positive findings. It should be interesting to see how many decide to post their papers, and whether or not there's a correlation between the public accessibility and the strength of the reasearch. We'll see. posted by Sydney on 4/29/2005 12:30:00 PM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
