Friday, August 19, 2005When she joined Girl Scouts, one of things my daughter was looking forward to was getting a magazine similar to the Boy's Life her brothers get from Boy Scouts. She was disappointed. Instead of a magazine that focuses on kids doing interesting things - climbing, sailing, rescuing people, she got a magazine about how to attract boys. She also thought when she joined Girl Scouts that she would get to do all the fun stuff her brothers do in Boy Scouts - camping, climbing, learning first aid, etc. Instead she just learned how to do crafts. She's in a new Girl Scout troop now, that does more than crafts, but she still doesn't get Girl's Life. She contents herself with her brothers' Boy's Life. Too bad no one in the magazine publishing world seems to be able to grasp that there is more to girls than sex and silliness. UPDATE: A reminder from a reader about another alternative for girls: I hope your daughter is aware of the Venturing program, run by the Boy Scouts, for both young men and women 14 through 20. This offers both sexes an opportunity to seek a challenging outdoor experience, and fills a need for young women that the Girl Scouts have been, by and large, unwilling to attempt. Disclaimer: I'm a long-time Boy Scout leader, so I am, no doubt, prejudiced in favor of the BSA. posted by Sydney on 8/19/2005 08:32:00 AM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
