Saturday, August 27, 2005It's nothing short of 'terrorism against science,' says Dr. Catherine D. DeAngelis, editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Medical Association, about the hundreds of hate-filled e-mails she received this week after publishing a medical review on fetal pain by San Francisco researchers. I know how she feels. My worst hate mail has been centered on the right-to-life issue, too, and I am decidedly pro-life. Unlike Dr. DeAngelis, my hate mail comes from the pro-choice and pro-euthanasia side. I suspect that blogs covering politics, and editors of newspapers and political magazines get hate mail that's far worse than either I or Dr. DeAngelis has gotten. I know Michael Fumento does. Maybe I'm just growing old, tired, and less tolerant, but bad behavior seems to be on the rise lately. It's almost as if people think it's acceptable to yell and curse and threaten in place of meaningful dialogue. Last week, I dismissed a patient from my practice for cursing and threatening my staff. But, as I was writing her letter, I kept thinking of a a certain nearby mayor. Which made me think of other politicians. How could I expect her to behave any better than our elites? In the end, I decided to hold her to acceptable standards of civility and dismissed her. Saving civilization has to start somewhere. posted by Sydney on 8/27/2005 03:07:00 PM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
