Tuesday, September 27, 2005But, most notable of all, when I leave in the morning for the hospital the Pleiades are high in the sky. They are to the autumn night what the bright maple and oak leaves are to an autumn day - a joy to behold. That cluster of little stars stands out amongst their brighter neighbors. They shimmer, almost as if they're dancing. They are gems, those stars. Odd then, that in so many cultures they are associated with death. The Aztecs believed that some great calamity befell the earth one midnight when the Pleiades reached their zenith many many years ago. And they thought it would happen again. (I suppose it did happen for them.) The Egyptians thought something similar, as did the Druids. They all had festivals centering on death and dying during that time of year. We do, too. It's called Halloween. But, they never make me think of death. They're far too beautiful for that. Seeing them always makes me feel happy. Even at 5:00 in the morning, before coffee. posted by Sydney on 9/27/2005 07:50:00 PM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
