Monday, September 12, 2005The first U.S. ban of a veterinary antibiotic due to concerns it could lead to antibiotic-resistant bacteria in humans will take effect Monday. Farmers will no longer able to use the antibiotic Baytril, known generically as enrofloxacin, on poultry under a ban issued by the Food and Drug Administration. The ban on the drug ends a five-year battle between manufacturer Bayer, the FDA, poultry farmers and advocacy groups who argue that the overuse of antibiotics could lead to strains of bacteria that no antibiotic can overcome. Baytril is in the same family as the popular drug Cipro, which is used in humans. The FDA ban does not apply to use of the drug in cattle and house pets. I know this will be a hardship for poultry farmers, but the overuse of those antibiotics is a problem for humans. posted by Sydney on 9/12/2005 08:18:00 AM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
