Primary Plight and Flight: This year, a few more medical students chose primary care residencies than last year:

Although 20,072 applicants selected residencies through the Match this year, only 3,032 matched into clearly identified primary care programs, including

* 2,318 in family medicine,
* 344 in internal medicine-pediatrics,
* 284 in the internal medicine-primary category and
* 86 in the pediatrics-primary category.

Could there really only be 86 people planning to be non-specialist pediatricians in this year's graduating classes of medical students? That seems awfully low. Perhaps the Match Program just isn't good about identifying those who intend to go into primary care pediatrics. But, lifestyle-friendly specialties continue to be popular - the specialties with the highest match rates were dermatology and anesthesiosology.

The boomers may not be able to find a doctor who will take care of their aches and pains, but they'll have no trouble finding someone to do their botox and put them to sleep for their face lifts.

    Those are some shocking numbers.

    The Boomers won't be seeing generalists anymore--instead, each will have a cardiologist, a vascular surgeon, a podiatrist, a pulmonologist, and a dermatologist. None of whom will speak to each other, of course.

    It's going to be one big fragmented mess in a few years, isn't it? (This internist is glad she got out early.)

    RE: ice scribe's comments -

    Well, this boomer (as long as I can afford it) will continue to have a generalist (a.k.a. family doctor) as my 1st line of health defense. Those specialists come and go, but my doctor has been the one constant in my 16 years since moving to the area.
