Akron Children's has used Children Services in the past to impose its will on children and parents. I can think of two cases where parents were either unhappy or concerned about their children's cancer treatments. When they halted or wished to delay treatment to review options Children Services were called immediately, the child was removed or removal was threatened, and the child's care became the sole responsibility of the hospital.
While many of us would continue with the treatment provided, when an institution can simply declare child abuse due to a parent not following the institution's chosen treatment plan we should be very concerned. Patient choice is paramount, regardless of outcome.
