Saturday, March 16, 2002What I am against is the promotion of alternative therapies without a reasoned evaluation of them. Before you claim, for instance, that acupuncture can cure cancer, you’d better have some good hard evidence for it. I am also against the classification of herbal preparations as dietary supplements precisely because they are pharmacologically active. These are drugs with the same potential for side effects and interactions as any prescription drug, and they should be regulated as such. Buying a drug is not the same as buying a bag of apples or even a multi-vitamin. Their presence on the shelf gives a chilling meaning to the phrase caveat emptor. Waiting until after fatal or near-fatal events occur to investigate them is not good enough.
