Friday, April 26, 2002Dr. Atkins is the author of the "Atkins Diet" a popular high protein, low carbohydrate weight loss diet. He claims that his diet gives you a healthy heart. He's also quick to point out that his heart condition has nothing to do with his diet. I wonder how he can be so sure. According to the story, the doctor suffers from cardiomyopathy, which means the muscle cells of his heart are diseased. He thinks it was caused by a virus. This is a supposition on his part. There is no way to confirm that with any medical certainty. However, this posting, by a nutritionist, on the physiologic effects of the the Atkins diet says it causes a depletion of glycogen in muscle cells. Glycogen is required by cells to keep themselves healthy and working properly. It’s not much of a stretch to surmise that his diet, if he follows it, may have something to do with his disease. posted by Sydney on 4/26/2002 07:00:00 AM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
