Everything's a crisis: It seems that the only way people feel they can get Congress's attention is to frame their cause as a "crisis" or "epidemic". Now it's the geriatric lobby who claims a crisis in healthcare , because so few doctors want to be geriatric specialists. No doubt we are facing an explosion in the elderly population as the baby boomers age, but not every elderly person needs a geriatrician to provide their care. Geriatricians are definitely an asset for cases with multiple complex medical and behavioral issues, but a well-trained internist or familiy physician should be perfectly capable of taking care of the average elderly person. posted by Sydney on
