African AIDS Update: The Constitutional Court in South Africa has ordered the government to provide an anti-viral drug to pregnant HIV-infected women. The drug in question, nevirapine, can be given as a single dose to the mother during labor, followed by a single dose to the infant within 72 hours of delivery to reduce the chances of transmission of the virus to the baby. This makes it particularly useful for those segments of the population who do not get routine prenatal care before delivering, a subset that also has a higher rate of HIV infection. posted by Sydney on
