Sunday, December 15, 2002A study published yesterday in the British Medical Journal showed that deaths associated with MRSA increased from 7.5 per cent in 1993 to 25 per cent in 1998 in England and Wales. Experts in Scotland have said the trend is being mirrored north of the Border. MRSA can be treated with the antibiotic vancomycin. The strain that the woman in Scotland had, is resistant to vancomycin. They tested the hospital and its staff for evidence of that particular type of bacteria, but came up empty. It’s likely that it came from the woman’s own skin. Moral of the story: Don’t give in to the temptation to use antibiotics for those winter sniffles. It only increases the risk of growing these resistant bugs. posted by Sydney on 12/15/2002 12:38:00 PM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
