Friday, December 20, 2002Among those who do not need Pap tests, the cancer society says, are women who have never had sexual intercourse, women who have had total hysterectomies that included removal of the cervix for reasons other than cancer and women age 70 or older who have had three or more normal Pap test results and no abnormal results in the last 10 years. Few tears will be shed over this, unless they're tears of joy. Most women would rather have a root canal than have a pap, but the new guidelines don't mean that the yearly pelvic exam is a thing of the past. In fact, the guidelines only refer to the pap test itself, the act of swabbing up random cells from the cervix and sending them off to the lab. Women should still have pelvic exams to check the vaginal walls for tumors, and warts; to check for uterine enlargement or ovarian tumors, and to check for sexually transmitted diseases. So, check those cheers and buck yourself up to continue on with the dreaded yearly pelvic. posted by Sydney on 12/20/2002 07:39:00 AM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
