Saturday, December 21, 2002The sole miracle that was approved by the Vatican and pushed her towards beatification involved Monica Besra, a tribal woman from Balurghat in North Bengal, who claimed to have been healed of a reportedly incurable abdominal tumour after she prayed to Mother. Following the claim, the then Archbishop of Kolkata Henry D'Souza constituted a five-member tribunal within the Diocesan Inquiry Team, including doctors and scientists and priests, to examine its veracity. While the tribunal recorded Besra's case as a "genuine miracle", doctors who treated her at the Balurghat and Raigunj hospitals challened her claim, saying that she was cured as a result of medical intervention. As the controversy raged on, a section of the clergy demanded that Besra's claim be re-examined and, if necessary, rejected to uphold the objectivity and credibility of Church inquiries. Unmoved by the controversy, the Vatican asserted that the miracle was a "fait accompli" and that it had no intention of re-examining the case. It's hard to be a saint in the modern world. Lucky for those who would be saints, the Vatican doesn't live in the modern world. posted by Sydney on 12/21/2002 09:27:00 AM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
