Tuesday, December 17, 2002At the typical well-child visit at two months of age a child gets these shots - DTaP, polio, Prevnar (for pneumonia) and Hib (for meningitis). At four and six months, they also get a hepatitis B shot, but that already comes in a combination form with the Hib shot. So, the only advantage of the new vaccine is that it combines IPV with DTaP. The disadvantage is that it has a higher incidence of post-immunization fever. The current regimen has a fairly low rate of that, much lower than it was in the old days when the cellular form of pertussis was used for the DTP. I’m not sure it’s worth the trade-off.
