Sunday, December 29, 2002Humara Ali was found with skull injuries, a broken leg and bruising, on the floor of the Airedale General Hospital. Authorities aren’t sure what happened, but the hospital staff called police when they found her. I’m betting she rolled off the bed. Normally, the hospital beds for infants are big cribs, but the sides come down so you can examine the baby and take care of them. Someone probably neglected to put the sides back up. A one month old usually isn’t able to roll over yet, but I’ve seen this happen. Parents of newborns sometimes report they rolled off the changing table when their backs were turned. And one day, one of my partner’s patients fell off the exam table in the office. She was about two weeks old, and her mother got distracted by her other child while she was dressing the baby. Moral of the story: Even though newborns can’t roll over, they can still fall from heights. So don’t turn your backs on them. posted by Sydney on 12/29/2002 08:05:00 AM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
