Friday, March 14, 2003On Jesica Santillan's surgeon: It is true that Jesica Santillan's death is a horrid tragedy due to human error ("A Tragic Error", March 3). But I take issue with your statement that the tragedy was "touched off by one careless moment in the life of an exemplary surgeon." As a nurse, I know that simply giving a unit of blood to a patient requires several signatures by personnel checking and rechecking the type and cross-match information before the blood can be given. Dr. James Jaggers was part of a large team, all of whom had the responsibility of checking the blood types. In addition, the New England Organ Bank and the Carolina Donor Services program also had the responsibility of qualifying the match. That Dr. Jaggers took full responsibility for the entire team and everyone involved speaks of his integrity. Good point, and one that will continue to be lost, for it will be Dr. Jaggers alone who will be hung out to dry at the malpractice trial. posted by Sydney on 3/14/2003 07:50:00 AM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
