Anti-Lenten Lesson: I saw one of my elderly patients yesterday for the first time in a long while. I should have seen a lot more of her in the past two years than I have, but ever since her husband died, she's been ignoring her medical problems. Including her depression. Refused treatment of any kind. But yesterday she came in and announced that she wanted all of her old medications refilled, and by the way she had checked her blood pressure at the grocery store a few times and noticed it was high. Could she get something for it? And, after many years, she had quit smoking. Why the sudden change? She won the lottery and wanted to live long enough to spend it all. And they say money can't buy happiness.
