Media and Medicine

Priceless: A few weeks ago, the hospital sent out letters to everyone likely to walk through their doors, from the janitors to the medical staff, putting them on warning. Security badges must be worn at all times, and no one was to go near labor and delivery or the post-partum floor unless they had real business there. Sextuplets were due to be delivered any day. No idle ogling would be tolerated. Only sanctioned ogling is allowed.

This, of course, is a public relations coup for the hospital. They've already sent out emails bragging about their equipment and their staff and how well they handled the situation. And this morning, I had trouble getting into the parking lot because it was blocked by two huge satellite trucks. Which is why I smiled in a mean sort of way when I read this quote from the head of the PR department:

When asked what the bill will be, Akron General spokesman Joe Jerek said it was too soon to say.

Then Jerek smiled.

"A birth like this really is priceless,'' he said"

He's right. You can't buy this kind of publicity. Maybe the hospital should cut the couple a deal on their bill.

(Came back later and added a sentence I had accidentally deleted in the original.)
