Tuesday, September 21, 2004It's short-sighted of them, really. Wouldn't it be much better for workers to have the wages to help pay for their own policy so they wouldn't be left high and dry when the company folds? Of course it would. But there are so many special interests whose interests are best served by the current system, it would take a shake-up of major proportions to change things. Insurance companies like the current system because they can negotiate prices with pre-determined risk pools (large employers) rather than working with large, population-based risk pools. Employees of large companies (and their unions) like the current system because they don't have to think too much about their healthcare insurance alternatives, and the premiums feel like they're free since their employer does the paying. I'm not sure what the answer is. Maybe when all the large employers have moved to Mexico and we've become a nation of shopkeepers, then individual policies will catch on - but only from necessity. posted by Sydney on 9/21/2004 10:01:00 PM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
