Sunday, February 20, 2005I have to say, her points about academic tenure are spot-on. Once an academic career is interrupted, it's near impossible to get it back on track. Publishing papers is imperative, and that's hard to do from home with the demands of kids, especially if you are in a field that requires laboraties or other uniquely university-supplied materials to do your job. So why aren't their more women mathematicians? That's a career of the mind only. Because academia also relies on a network for its hires. (I won't say old-boy, because it can be just as much old-girl depending on the field.) Drop out of academia and you drop out of the network. posted by Sydney on 2/20/2005 01:33:00 PM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
