Wednesday, August 24, 2005This particular blood test detects variations in activity in two these enzymes - CYP2D6 and CYP2C19, which metabolize about 25% of all drugs. The test can sort people into ultra-rapid metabolizers, who have excessive amounts of the enzyme; extensive metabolizers, who have normal enzyme levels; intermediate metabolizers, who have slightly below normal levels; and poor metabolizers, who have no enzyme activity. The question of the day is, is it worth $500 to find out where you fall before taking medication, or might you be better off to try the medication and see how you do? The answer, as with so many things in healthcare, depends on whose paying for it. posted by Sydney on 8/24/2005 07:00:00 AM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
