The Fourth Plinth: London's Trafalgar Square is centered on a monument to a one-armed man. And although created over a 160 years ago, the square is still incomplete. Only three corners have permanent statues - all monuments to military men. The fourth is empty. (They ran out of funds.) But, it isn't unused. It's now a display pedestal for rotating art works. The current sculpture does Admiral Lord Nelson one better - an armless woman. The image will be familiar to anyone who's read about thalidomide. Drugs and bodies, it turns out, are a recurring theme for the artist. posted by Sydney on
