Saturday, October 22, 2005Tamiflu, the antiviral drug being stockpiled against a potential outbreak of pandemic flu, will remain in short supply for as long as a year because of the drug's complicated chemistry, drug makers said Friday. It may be years before we ever see a deadly flu pandemic. Couldn't these governments build up their stockpiles a little more slowly without depriving the world of a means to treat the flu of the present? ASIDE: This is interesting. Tamiflu is yet another drug with a spice and herb connection: Among Tamiflu's many components is shikimic acid, isolated from an herb called star anise. Roche depends on other companies for intermediate steps in making shikimic acid, and one of the steps is 'explosive,' Hurley said. Nice photo of the flower, here. posted by Sydney on 10/22/2005 01:36:00 PM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
