Tuesday, November 29, 2005Nearly a century after a statue of William McKinley was erected in the California town of Arcata, some residents want it exiled, perhaps to Canton, the longtime home of the president assassinated in 1901. Michael Schleyer, angered about McKinley's role in the start of the Spanish-American War in 1898, recently presented officials in Arcata with 1,300 signatures on a petition to have the statue removed from a historical plaza in the Northern California coastal town. ``The truth of McKinley is he's just like any of the other people who throughout history caused mass destruction and death,'' said Schleyer, who has compared McKinley to Adolf Hitler and Mao Zedong.
