Tuesday, November 15, 2005After the postponement, more than 100 relatives of the infected children clashed with riot police outside the court, hurling stones and bottles. The violence was apparently sparked by a police officer pushing a female protester to the ground. Wielding sticks, the police charged the relatives and dispersed them. Three demonstrators were arrested, and at least one police officer was lightly wounded in the clash. The relatives had held banners and placards outside the court calling for the death sentences to be carried out. Many parents held photographs of the 426 children infected at the al-Fath Children's Hospital in Benghazi. At least 50 of the children have reportedly died, heightening the pressure on Libya's government to punish the culprits. But the defence has argued that HIV, the virus that leads to the fatal AIDS disease, was circulating because of the hospital's poor standards of hygiene. ...Several European diplomats attended the session. Afterward some were attacked by relatives in the clash outside and fled back into the building. A diplomatic car was hit by a stone. ....In a report released Tuesday, the New York-based Human Rights Watch quoted the Palestinian doctor, Ashraf Ahmad Juma, as saying he was tortured by electric shock, beating and sleep deprivation. "The confession was like multiple choice, and when I gave a wrong answer, they shocked me," HRW reported Juma as saying in the presence of a prison guard. posted by Sydney on 11/15/2005 08:07:00 AM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
