Tuesday, December 27, 2005Libya is suspending talks on compensation for the families of more than 400 HIV-infected children. It comes a day after Libya's supreme court quashed a death penalty verdict against six foreign medics accused of deliberately infecting the children ....There were demands of $10m in blood money for each family of the victims. .....An international fund for the Libyan children was set up to pay for medical treatment abroad, an upgrade in health facilities in the coastal town of Benghazi and financial payments. The Libyan official says any future talks on compensation with the families will take place on an official and NGO level between the EU, Bulgaria, Libya and the United States. Does that mean the Libyans are beginning to relent on their blackmail, or that they hope to profit more by including the EU and the US? The families of the infected children, however, are still calling for blood, not blood money. Here's a detailed history of the case, including the politics involved. posted by Sydney on 12/27/2005 07:30:00 AM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
