Monday, December 26, 2005For 20 years, Claudette and Danny Hopkins have waited for this Christmas -- a holiday celebrated by a family of three. Madison Marissa Hopkins is their gift, an answer to two decades of prayers and hopes. And her birth on Nov. 7 was so unexpected that Dr. Justin Lavin, Claudette's Akron obstetrician, believes that it occurred under circumstances that may be unique in medical literature. ``As far as we can find out,'' Lavin said, ``she's the only person in the world who has had'' two procedures to treat fibroids ``and got pregnant -- at least the only reported case we have been able to find.'' She had a whole stack of odds against her - age, polycystic ovaries, and a prior gastric bypass surgery. One of the gynecological procedures she had - an endometrial ablation - destroys the lining of the uterus, which in turn makes it extremely difficult to support a developing fetus. The other was a fibroid embolization, which isn't quite as devastating to childbearing chances as an ablation, but still has its risks, nonetheless. Neither of these surgeries were done to improve her fertility. She had given up on medical science's ability to help her conceive. She long ago turned to prayer. Looks like they were answered. posted by Sydney on 12/26/2005 07:13:00 AM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
