Monday, December 12, 2005As doctors increasingly weigh the effects of race and culture on mental illness, some are asking whether pathological bias ought to be an official psychiatric diagnosis. Advocates have circulated draft guidelines and have begun to conduct systematic studies. While the proposal is gaining traction, it is still in the early stages of being considered by the professionals who decide on new diagnoses. Pathological bias. Goodness. Don't we have enough diseases in the world without inventing one out of whole cloth? Dr. Sanity is livid. Shrinkette isn't buying it. ShrinkWrapped says it's psychiatric nonsense. They all point out that there are already diagnosis categories for people with irrational obsessions and fears. A new one isn't needed, thank you. Especially one that is so subjective it can be easily abused by anyone in authority - be they right or left of the political spectrum. posted by Sydney on 12/12/2005 08:32:00 AM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
