Friday, January 06, 2006Recurring breast cancer could be caused by newly discovered rare stem cells transformed into a 'tumour factory' by genetic errors, scientists have said. Researchers believe that as well as driving all breast development, the cells may have a key role in cancer. The Australian team transplanted the cells into mice tissue and were able to grow a fully-functioning breast. Writing in Nature, they say they also found the key stem cells were more numerous in pre-cancerous tissue. Very interesting, but no one yet knows if the same sorts of cells exist in humans. If they do exist in humans, however, which do you think will happen first - we learn to turn them off to treat cancer, or we learn to turn them on to make breasts bigger without surgery? posted by Sydney on 1/06/2006 08:51:00 AM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
