Tuesday, March 21, 2006The head of Thailand's Disease Control Department, Thawat Suntrajarn, said that 168 villagers contracted botulism -- a rare neuromuscular disease that is often fatal -- after eating the traditionally prepared bamboo shoots that had been stored in aluminum trays. Among the villagers, 143 were admitted to hospital, with 33 of them needing respirators to assist their breathing, another 36 awaiting medical examinations to determine if they need respirators, while the remaining 74 patients are hospitalized under close medical supervision. The number of the patients infected with Clostridium botulinum is the largest reported incident of botulism ever in Thailand -- and perhaps in the world, Thawat said. " Bad home canning technique or experiment in bioterrorism? posted by Sydney on 3/21/2006 08:48:00 AM 1 comments 1 Comments:My guess is just bad canning technique. From what I understand about botulism it seems like we should probably have more cases due to bad home canning, or things like home-made flavored oils. Garlic in oil (home-made) is supposed to be a big no-no due to the ease of accidentally firing up a culture of botulism. |
