Tuesday, March 28, 2006CHINA has finally issued long-awaited regulations on human organ transplants, explicitly banning the sale of body parts, requiring written permission from donors and introducing medical standards in an effort to reduce the number of botched operations and improve survival rates. About 2 million patients in China need organ transplants each year but only 20,000 can be conducted because of a shortage of donated organs. More than 99 per cent of the 7000 to 8000 kidneys transplanted each year in China come from executed prisoners; the rest from patients' relatives or other donors.
