Saturday, March 25, 2006As ovarian function declines during menopause, estrogen production also declines. Women require support to aid in challenges during these times. This collection supports women during these and premenstrual symptoms. Chaste Tree Vitex agnus-castus, Marshmallow Althaea officinalis, Motherwort Leonurus cardiaca, Angelica Angelica archangelica, Roman Chamomile Chamaemelum nobile, Clary Sage Salvia sclarea. Motherwort is a common roadside weed believed to treat "female weaknesses and disorders, allaying nervous irritability, inducing quiet and passivity of the whole nervous system." They say Chamomile is particularly well suited as a "sedative and a nervine, it is especially suited for young children." (Which would, I suppose, explain its use in Peter Rabbit.) Clary sage is supposed to help with PMS and menstrual cramps. I'm not sure what purpose Angelica or marshmallow serve, but perhaps they serve best when whipped into confections. Strange, isn't it, that only one of the herbs seems to be directed at a physical problem of women, while at least two of them are directed toward sterotypical hyster-type symptoms. But then, medicinal herbs had their heyday when women were considered bundles of hysterical nerves, so what can we expect? posted by Sydney on 3/25/2006 08:15:00 PM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
