Friday, March 02, 2007A majority of Americans say the federal government should guarantee health insurance to every American, especially children, and are willing to pay higher taxes to do it, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll. This American already hands over 36% of her income for taxes. (My accountant says that if a business makes less than the $90,000 cut off for the self-employment tax, they pay 46% of their income.) If my taxes go up, there's a good chance I'll have to close my business. So would a lot of other small businesses. But here's what people really meant when they said they're willing to pay more in taxes for health insurance: Americans showed a striking willingness in the poll to make tradeoffs to guarantee health insurance for all, including paying as much as $500 more in taxes a year and forgoing future tax cuts. That's an awfully naive estimate of the yearly cost of universal health insurance. It just underscores how sheltered the average American is from the realities of healthcare insurance markets. And that right there is the problem. posted by Sydney on 3/02/2007 07:31:00 PM 1 comments 1 Comments:
The Times is careless in their article by mixing up health care and health insurance. One might conclude the Times thinks that they are the same, or that the difference just doesn't matter. By 12:07 PM , at |
