Wednesday, August 01, 2007The bickering devolved into shouting across the House floor Tuesday evening when Republican Rep. Lee Terry told Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner to "shut up" after Weiner yelled, "We can't trust you," while House Minority Leader John Boehner spoke in opposition to the debate rules. Democratic members were taunting Boehner as he discussed why Republicans had launched a protest to the manner in which the legislation is being pushed through the chamber. House Majority Leader Stony Hoyer reprimanded his caucus by forcefully shushing members and declaring both sides out of order. Republican Rep. Jeff Flake of Arizona characterized the antics by saying the chamber had turned "into the House of Commons." Degenerated into the House of Commons. Giggle. But this is tame compared to past Congressional fights. There was a a generalized brawl with fists, not words and a beating into unconsciousness in the 1850's, and in the 1790's there was a fight with canes and fire tongs. posted by Sydney on 8/01/2007 09:32:00 PM 3 comments 3 Comments:
During the debate over the Missouri Compromise, Senator Foote of Mississippi provoked Senator Benton of Missouri into charging toward him in a rage. Foote retreated in panic from the burly six-foot Benton to the Senate president's rostrum, and pulled a gun! By Rich Rostrom, at 1:00 AM Wow, I had no idea. I guess congress is full of people just like any other place. By 1:26 PM , at
