Mel's Madness: Mickey Kaus points out this relevant past medical history in the case of Mel Gibson:

He has made it known that from an early age he suffered from being manic depressive, but through his strong faith and appropriate medicines he has been able to overcome these shortcomings to attain the heights of stardom.

A bipolar out of control is a painful thing to watch. And Mel Gibson has certainly been acting like a bipolar man out of control. Too bad, because he seems to be a real stand up guy when he's in control.

Um. Bipolar? Then where is he when Patti Duke speaks out?

Untreated bipolar, or bipolar with EtOH, is rotten as hell.

Is Mel just being Hollywood or is he actually suffering?

I grew up in a family in which depression and bi-polar behaviour both run. Having seen both the sucessful and unsucessful treatment of it, I have to say it is often things that the behaviour can be bizarre, often bewildering to both the person involved and family members surrounding them. Worse, the people involved often feel as if they are forced to watch themselves commit acts while watching from the sidelines. Having seen my brother slice himself up and land in the hospital as a result of his guilt, I'm not about to judge anyone under a maniac episode.
